In the summer of 1963, the Fellows and students of Fitzwilliam House moved to the initial stage of a newly-built campus in the northwest of the city, starting the journey towards becoming a college of the University of Cambridge. The non-collegiate institution formerly occupied a Georgian house on Trumpington Street, and the move to the Storey's Way site began a process of establishing a new identity and sense of place that has evolved and matured over the intervening 60 years. To celebrate the completion of the first phase of the buildings designed by British modernist architect, Denys Lasdun, the College has organised a series of events and two complementary exhibitions; Building Fitzwilliam - The Lasdun Years and The Architects' Table, exploring Fitzwilliam's built fabric from concept to campus.

Building Fitzwilliam - The Lasdun Years
Denys Lasdun is one of the most recognised architects of the twentieth century and was the creative mind behind some of the country's most important cultural and educational projects such as the National Theatre and the Royal College of Physicians. Fitzwilliam was one of his earliest university-educational projects and the exhibition surveys the project from its inception, portraying the intricacies of its design and implementation and the importance of its legacy. The exhibition was created by Life Fellow and Archivist, Dr John Cleaver, using material from the College's archive.

The Architects' Table
The current College represents an implicit collaboration between a series of talented architectural practices. Each has embraced the principles of Lasdun's original masterplan whilst establishing a distinctive identity and strengthening the cohesion of the campus. Conceived to resemble a working table in an architectural studio, the exhibition shows a small sample of the material produced as part of the creative process, displayed together for the first time as an ensemble of ideas. The exhibition was curated and designed by Fitzwilliam Bye-Fellow Eric Martin with support from Allies and Morrison.

Visting the Exhibitions
The Exhibitions are now open to all in the Auditorium Foyer. To enter the College, place come to the Porters' Lodge on Storey's Way, and you will be directed to the Auditorium. If you would like to arrange for a group educational visit, please contact communications@fitz.cam.ac.uk to make a booking. Depending on availability, we may be able to schedule a guided tour with a specialist or one of the curators.

The Exhibition is fully accessible, and disabled parking is available in our Storey's Way car park. Please speak to the Porter on duty on arrival, and they will ensure that the (rather heavy) outside door to the Auditorium is open.
