Dr Lena Quambusch

Research Associate

I obtained my PhD in Chemical Biology from TU Dortmund, Germany, and began a DFG-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cambridge in late 2022. My research is centered on developing chemical biology tools and advancing early drug discovery.

Currently, in the Hyvönen Lab at the Department of Biochemistry, I focus on Activin A, a protein linked to tumor growth and progression. Our work aims to target Activin A with small, drug-like molecules, offering a more precise alternative to antibody-based therapies. Leveraging cutting-edge techniques like Fragment-Based Drug Discovery (FBDD) and X-ray crystallography, we have identified promising molecules that disrupt Activin A's interaction with its receptor, laying the groundwork for novel cancer treatments.

Beyond research, I contribute to teaching by supervising the Part IB "Introduction to Chemical Biology" course, overseeing Part II student projects in our lab, and supporting the "Reactivity and Enzyme Catalysis" BMB practical during the Michaelmas term.
