Born and raised in Norwich, I studied for a BA in Maths at St Hilda's College, Oxford before moving to Queen Mary and Westfield College in London for postgraduate studies. I then spent two years as a postdoc at the RWTH in Aachen, Germany, followed by a blissful year lecturing at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. I returned to the UK to work with Professor Marcus du Sautoy, who was then in Cambridge. My research is in group theory. Groups are beautiful algebraic structures that abstract the notion of symmetry. Since 2001 I have been the Director of Studies of Mathematics at Fitzwilliam College. I enjoy teaching and supervise many of the undergraduate pure maths courses. When not being mathematical I like to play and coach korfball (a Dutch sport played by mixed teams), jog half marathons (very slowly) and take part in open water swimming events.
