Derek Fray FRS, FREng was educated at Imperial College (BSc 1961, PhD 1965). In his subsequent career, he was an assistant professor of metallurgy. Massachusetts Institute of Technology; group leader, Rio Tinto plc; university lecturer, University of Cambridge; professor of mineral engineering and head of department, University of Leeds; professor of materials chemistry and head of department, University of Cambridge. At Fitzwilliam, he was librarian, estates bursar, junior bursar and senior bursar at various times. He was a founder director of the following companies, Ion Science Ltd., British Titanium plc., EMC Ltd., Camfridge Ltd., Metalysis Ltd., Chinuka Ltd. and Inotec AMD Ltd.
He is an honorary professor at University of Science and Technology, Beijing, Hebei Polytechnic University and Liaoning University of Science and Technology in China and has won many international awards.
